Kick Off Your Weekend with the 38th Annual Greek Food Fair
The 38th Annual Greek Food Fair, a Central Iowa tradition, will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George on Friday, June 3rd from 5:30 – 9 pm,; Saturday, June 4th, 11 am to 8 pm; Sunday, June 5th 11 am to 5 pm. The Greek Food Fair has changed from last year with the addition of Friday evening, serving Mezethes (Greek Tapas) small food plates to share, Greek beer, wine and Ouzo.
By changing the layout of the food fair this year and moving the vendor/food area to the parking lot, we will be offering new food items and expanding our Ala Carte items. Some other changes for this year include our fellow Orthodox Christians bringing a taste from our Serbian members and the Serbian Church located in Des Moines, Iowa.
Since 1978, on the first weekend in June, the lawn of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George comes alive with the sights, sounds and aromas of the Greek Food Fair. Greek dancers, with guests joining in, dance to traditional Greek music. Grills sizzle and refreshments flow as volunteers cook for enthusiastic crowds and people wander eagerly between booths sampling a variety of tasty Greek Cuisine.
Now in its 38th year, the Greek Food Fair reflects, as well celebrates, Grecian foods, culture and heritage and other European flavors. This labor of love is organized and hosted by our members, Greek and Serbian. The Food Fair is a family event with activities for children. Attendees are invited to tour our church and see the unique, historic beauty of its interior.
If you feel like escaping Equitable Apartments in Des Moines, Iowa for the day, this event is a perfect opportunity to do just that!
