Check Out All the Nostalgic Music Favorites at the 2016 Des Moines Art Festival
Those who have experienced the Des Moines Arts Festival would not be surprised to know that this annual event has become a most remarkable international phenomenon. The festival has evolved since its first edition in 1958, when “Art in the Park” was hosted on the grounds of the Des Moines Art Center. While the event name & venues have changed through the years, the festival mission remains unwavering — to educate, inspire & engage audiences toward a heightened appreciation of visual & other forms of art & to enhance our sense of pride in the Des Moines community.
Nostalgic 1990s alternative band Gin Blossoms & 1970s radio rock favorites Grand Funk Railroad are set to headline the music portion of this year’s Festival. Gin Blossoms found mainstream success in the ‘90s for a collection of jangly, alternative pop hits such as “Hey Jealousy” & “Follow You Down.” The band’s 1992 record, “New Miserable Experience” sold more than 4 million copies. The group’s latest studio album, “No Chocolate Cake,” was released in 2010. Gin Blossoms will headline the main stage on June 24.
Grand Funk will headline the main stage on June 25.Co-headlining this year’s festival is ‘70s staple rock act Grand Funk Railroad. Known iconic hits such as “We’re An American Band” and “The Locomotion,” Grand Funk has released thirteen studio albums, selling more than 25 million records worldwide. With releasing its first album in 1969, the group has been touring for nearly 50 years.
Performing this year are The Well Pennies, which is a husband & wife folk-pop duo from Des Moines, Matt Woods who is an Iowa native songwriter Matt Woods "Outlaw Country" sound is based on classic country & rock 'n roll, Paul Doffing who is known for touring the country on bicycle, Frances Luke Accord who is an independent Chicago-based duo hailing originally from South Bend, Indiana.
Other Iowa musicians performing include The High Crest, Milk & Eggs, Steve & Michaela McLain, Luke Fox, The Host Country, Brooks Stause's Extravision, In Rooms, Dan Trilk, Rob Lumbard & Rich Webster and Sarah Nevins.
